STRIVE

Sickle cell disease is one of the most prevalent chronic illnesses affecting inner-city children. Adolescents with sickle cell face particularly severe challenges including pain crises requiring lengthy hospital stays; negative self-esteem and body-image; negative desire to graduate from high school and attend college because of frequent school absenteeism due to hospitalization; and the expectation that they assume responsibility for managing their disease.

In response, STRIVE provides these teens with education in how to manage their disease, an organized network of peer support, technology skill training, and intensive one-on-one mentoring and tutoring relationships.
