Diabetes affects over 18 million people in the United States, of whom five to ten percent have the disease in the Type 1 (juvenile onset) form. Type 1 diabetes requires constant vigilance and conscientious management throughout childhood and adolescence to prevent serious long-term health consequences such as heart disease; stroke; and damage to the eyes, kidneys, and nerves.
The TIDES program offers youth with Type I diabetes peer and mentor support and disease management education, fostering positive outlook and healthy lifestyle. Weekly program sessions provide participants with a supportive environment in which they learn how to incorporate effective diabetes management, including diabetic-appropriate diet and exercise, into their daily lives. Past sessions have included guest speakers, field trips, and participation in America’s Walk for Diabetes.
